I’ve been to Stockholm three times now. But only for approximately 5 hours each time. There’s a TON to do there, though, and someday I plan on taking a right proper holiday there. For now, however, I’ll fill you in on what I’ve done on the three aforementioned trips.
Trip one- spent in the Old Town. Got a tour of the castle (castle? palace? I’m too lazy to Google it)- well worth the admission fee. It gave an overview of Swedish history, which was helpful. The guide spoke excellent English (no surprise there).
Trip two- spent wandering aimlessly in the Old Town. I’m not complaining. I love wandering aimlessly in new cities. It’s what I do, by and large. It was also spent eating. A lot. We hit up TGIFriday’s, got some slushees at the 7-11, found a most excellent bakery, grabbed some ice cream- you get the idea.
Trip three- spent eating (as I’ve already mentioned) but also checking out where to go with kids in Stockholm. And, wow- is having a kid in Stockholm awesome or WHAT? Let’s check out the free children’s library (I know that most libraries are free- but when you see this one, you’ll be blown away) in the cultural house, shall we?
It was as if Walt Disney himself had designed this children’s library.
This photo doesn’t do it justice, but there were so many children running around, and I’m pretty sure their parents didn’t want a stranger photographing their kids and then posting them online. So, this is the only one I dared to take. It seems I’m not the only one who had trouble photographing it- nothing online does this place justice. It’s just amazing. There are staircases and play areas and a room for painting and a room filled with Moomin cutouts and all sorts of wonderful, wonderful things. I can’t wait to take Benjy and Henry here.
And we checked out James’s international daycare. Which was great. And had great, adorable, international children.
Oh! And grocery shopping (always WAY fun in Stockholm). And I bought a gift for my mother in law- a glass orange cutting board. No, it was way cooler than it sounds.
Trip four- We’ll go in the summer- hopefully THIS summer. And we’ll hit up Pippi Longstocking’s house, Gröna Lund amusement park, and Skansen open air museum. I’m pretty stoked.
You’re all welcome to join me.

I’ll be there in the third weekend of June – hope we’ll overlap!
Oh Sarah – we are soul mates. I would plan a trip around eating and wandering too!
What a fabulous place! I’d be stoked to come for a visit. Maybe sometime after we’re finally able to make it as far as Disneyland. LOL
